The Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) are mandated to collect royalties on behalf of all artists in the country and then disseminate it to them.

However, GHAMRO barely retrieves any revenue and whatever they do get, they send it to artists at irregular intervals

Ghanaian artists are always complaining about not receiving their royalties from GHAMRO, with the latest to do so being rapper Edem.

The Volta Regime Music Group (VRMG) top-dog spoke with the Late Night Celebrity Show and complained about barely receiving any royalties from GHAMRO.

Asked about the frequency of his royalties, Edem said they come once every ‘1,000’ years.

“GHAMRO pays me royalties once in a thousand years. But I mean it is a start, its nothing you can write home about,” he said.

“If as an ‘A’ list artiste, you get a cheque of GHS 700 in a very long time, it is very bad.”

To improve the situation, Edem called for a law backing the collection of royalties to ensure everyone who has to pay royalties actually pays.

‘’GHAMRO collects royalties for artistes registered under them. But if a law comes from parliament and directs radio stations to pay a certain amount to artists, they will pay,’’ he noted.
