‘Me P3, I Never Enjoyed My Reign As Captain Of The Black Stars’ – Asamoah Gyan Laments

Indeed Asamoah Gyan has never known peace ever since he missed that penalty kick in a game between Ghana and Uruguay during the 2010 World Cup hosted in South Africa.

All the good things this gentleman did for his nation just went with the wind because of missing one penalty kick. He was chopped, roasted and criticized by Ghanaians for years.

He then Captained the Senior National Team, Black Stars for about 7 and just some few days to the just ended AFCON 2019, his Captaincy band was stripped from by Coach James kwesi Appiah.

In a recent interview on Joy FM, Asamoah Gyan recalled some of the things Ghanaians have done to him ever since he accepted to lead Black Stars players.

Gyan also revealed that he knew he was not in the Coach’s plan so he was not surprised after he heard the news about captaincy being taken from him.

“NO. I knew i wasn’t. I’ve been in the team for many years now, and how things were going, i knew i wasn’t in his plans at all. Knowing I wasn’t in Kwesi Appiah’s plans, I was just waiting for that opportunity. I don’t regret going for the tournament. Regretting would be disrespect to the President who asked me on phone to rescind my decision.”

” I don’t want to say things but it’s okay. A captain is a captain. What is ‘General Captain’? I don’t understand its meaning even now. Since I became captain of the Black Stars, I’ve never been allowed to enjoy my reign. Me alone, I never enjoyed my role as a captain. For seven years as a captain, I never enjoyed my tenure. Why. So many hypocrites around never allowed me to enjoy”.

On whether he didn’t obey the instruction of the Coach when the AFCOn was on, he said,

“I obeyed all the Coach’s instructions. In our game against Tunisia, he asked me to warm up and I did. I asked Ekuban to accompany me just to warm up but the coach called Ekuban to play ahead of me. I didn’t ask the coach why. I never interfere.” he said in the interview.
