In a chilling Gene Adu-imagined music video, singer Cina Soul takes on the complex emotional dynamic of abuse in a romantic relationship; a vicious cycle that could potentially turn brutal.

Via an Instagram post announcing the record, the “Ojorley” chanteuse revealed the record as one aimed at raising awareness on abusive partnerships–a menace she “learnt about” this year.

“Killi Mi,” the song that the video accompanies, succeeds the widely-received and satirical “Ojorley,” that addresses infidelity in marriages. It portrays perpetrators as victims too, in the long run. This theory is advanced masterfully via gruesome imagery in the film. It has an aggravated Cina Soul, in one instance, as the aggressor, her Afro-haired onscreen partner at the receiving end. At other points in the film, the roles are reversed, portraying her as the one with bruises. Abuse is a two-way street, viewers deduce by the end of the clip.

The crux of Soul’s commentary is particularly present in the paradoxical hook that sings: “You dey killi me, dey pity me.” That line is rendered via the effective call-and-respond technique.

Ferried on gentle string-led and trumpet-laden highlife, “Killi Mi” also supplies a nostalgic reference to Fela’s iconic “Lady,” that mocks the quiddities of the modern African “lady.”

Signed to Universal Music, Nigeria, Soul (born Christie Quincyna Quarcoopome) is author of a 2016 EP, Metanoia. She has performed on major stages in the country, and has been associated with a number of top acts…most notably, Worlasi, KiDi, and rapper M.anifest.
