Starting from Thursday, May 7, Ghana will start daily testing of the COVID-19 to be able to get daily updates on the coronavirus cases in the country.

According to Professor William Kwabena Ampofo of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, this exercise is a way to pave way for daily updates and it will enhance their works to be able to give results in time.

He said this in a press briefing on COVID-19 organized by the ministry of communication in Accra yesterday.

We have expanded testing beyond Accra and Kumasi. There is limited testing in Ho at the University of Health and Allied Sciences. We are expecting a donation from the International Atomic Energy through the Ministry of Health. We hope that by next week, this will be fully established and, therefore, they will be able to increase testing in Ho for the Volta Region and also the Oti Region.

He said

We hope that we will also be able to get the War Memorial Hospital (in Navrongo) testing as soon as possible. So, it is a joint effort, one health approach being practiced directly between the Ghana Health Service and the Veterinary Service Directorate. We are also going to utilize the gene expert system, which is prevalent in almost every region of Ghana – there is a specific center that has gene expert machine for tuberculosis (TB) and there is a test that has been developed for COVID-19
