The rapid increment and violence and defilement of Nigerian women have led to a pronouncement of State of emergency by the Nigerian Government after careful consideration of complaints and protests, made by the women.

Some rapists and bandits have taken advantage of the lockdown which was initiated to contain the spread of coronavirus in Nigeria, to rape and attack women in their homes and communities, which has indeed inflicted pain and fear in their heart, making a living in the country a difficult one for the women.

Angry youths have signed petition and protests several times, calling on the government come to their aid as defilement cases recorded keep rising.

A survey that was published by NOIPolls in regards to rape cases in Nigeria, indicated that one person out of three women when selected has an issue of sexual assault and the victims are unable to voice out their worry and report to the authorities, due to stigmatization and criticism by others.

Nigeria’s President Muhammad Buhari has said in a speech on Friday how unhappy he is about the cases of rape.

“I am particularly upset at recent incidents of rape, especially of very young girls,” Buhari said in his televised Democracy Day address.

“I wish to assure all our women of this administration’s determination to fight Gender-Based Violence through the instrumentality of the law and awareness creation.”

“The Police are pursuing these cases with a view to bringing perpetrators of these heinous crimes to swift justice.”
