A serious debate set in among Nigerians and their neighboring countries like Ghana as it has been rumored that the current president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari had died in 2017 and he is being replaced secretly by his lookalike Jubril from Sudan.

As Nigerians are protesting for their freedom to end Sars police brutality which is trending on social media with the hashtag #EndSars, rumours had spread on social of the death of Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari and his subsequent replacement by an imposter from Sudan named Jubril.

Buhari spent about 5 months in Britain in 2017 for care for an unidentified illness that raised many concerns and triggered protests for him to give up power.

He returned from a long medical leave to lead the government managed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who, in the absence of Buhari, was the acting president.

Buhari’s leave for medical attentions brought about rumour of an African president being cloned by an imposter.

This news on Buhari and his imposter was also alleged to be false news and a fabricated story by the opposition government because it came prior to the country’s general election in February 2019.

It was reported to have been started by Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Biafran separatist organisation, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who had said in a video that Buhari died in 2017 and replaced by Jubril who went through plastic surgery to be a Buhari lookalike. He alleged that Buhari was buried in Saudi Arabia.

The Jubril theories kept making the rounds on social media platforms and on YouTube with videos and pictures making comparisons between the president and his speculated clone.

Buhari’s ears, hands, height and face were compared and contrasted by many Nigerians fueling the theories and drawing others into the conversation without any evidence.

Some of the Jubril theorists have demanded a DNA test to prove or disprove their claim which has been widely believed by many Nigerians.

However, Buhari addressed the speculations in a town hall session with Nigerians in Poland where he described the rumours as “ignorant and irreligious” when he was asked about Jubril.

“It’s real me, I assure you … I will soon celebrate my 76th birthday and I will still go strong … A lot of people hoped that I died during my ill health,” he said.

Also, photo was shared by daughter of President Muhammadu Buhari, Zahra Buhari allegedly confirming the death of her father.

Zahra shared the photo on her verified Instagram page, on 19th December 2019. In the photo, she was spotted with her family members together with the alleged imposter Jibril Al Sudani who posed as President Buhari.

Her captioned confirmed that indeed her father is dead.

According to photos on circulating on social media, the former army general has been long dead and replaced with his clone known as Jibril Al Sudani.

To make it authentic, a death certificate bearing Buhari’s name has been leaked on the internet and has caused divided opinions.

In 2020 as Nigerians try to bury the ongoing #EndSars protest, the same debate has unraveled on yesterday when Buhari had to give his speech as he addressed police brutality in Nigeria for the first time.

There have been mixed reactions on the internet after a video of Buhari went viral that raised many theories online. According to many, it wasn’t Buhari that gave the speech last night by rather his imposter.

Some revealed that the address was even prerecorded and well edited to sound like Buhari as some pointed finger considering how Buhari moved his mouth and his weight gain and many more.

According to the Nigerian President, his government has heard the plight of the protestors and making sure their requests are being granted through the right means.

However, he said nothing about the infamous Lekki Toll Gate shooting. In this excerpt from the 12 minutes broadcast, he added that “ to our neighbours in particular, and members of the international community, many of whom have expressed concern about the ongoing development in Nigeria, we thank you and urge you all to seek to know all the facts available before taking a position”.
