The Queen mother of Apam in the Gomoa West District of the Central region, Nana Essel Botwe III has warned Ghanaian journalists about their reportage concerning what possibly led to the drowning of 20 teens on the sea last week.
Speaking at the burial ceremony of twelve of the drowned teens, she cautioned the media against speculations that the kids were engaging in sexual activities on the sea, before they were swept away by its high tides.
“I have heard in the media that our kids were engaging in sexual activity and that is why they got drowned; I want to plead with our journalists to be mindful of our feelings and respect the dead. Which of the journalists was there to witness the kids having that sexual affair?”, the aggrieved queen questioned.
In his speech, Member of Parliament for the Gomoa West Constituency, Hon. Richard Guan Mensah consoled the bereaved families and donated an amount of GHC 500 to each of the 12 bereaved families and the 6 survivors.
Central Regional Minister, Hon. Justina Marigold Assam, who represented President Akufo-Addo at the burial service conveyed the condolences of the government and people of Ghana to the bereaved families and the chiefs and people of Apam.
On behalf of the President and the Republic, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson presented cheques of GHC 10,000 to each of the bereaved families and the Apam Township and GHC 5000 to each of the six surviving kids.
A solemn ceremony was observed to expunge the names of all the 12 deceased teens from the registers of their various schools.
All the victims of the carnage have since been buried while the survivors have been reunited with their families.
