17-year-old Tyrone Iras Marhguy, the teen who was refused admission to his dream school, Achimota School, because of his Rastafarian hairstyle and his father, Ras Aswad Nkrabeah has spoken in an interview on Citi News.
According to the teenager, when he arrived at Achimota School a mistress prevented him from submitting the items the school authorities asked first-year students to buy and submit.
In an interview with Citi TV, Marhguy disclosed that the mistress was blunt about her bias against his hairstyle as she told him she does not want to have anything to do with him because of his natural hair.
”When I got there, I was directed to a chapel where the people wait, the place they present the items they were asked to buy. When I got there with my stuff, one of the mistresses who was packing the items presented into the cars told me she wants nothing to do with me because of my dreadlocks, so I should pack my stuff and sit away from the other items presented,”
Marhguy recalled.
He added that the mistress said the school will not accept him because of his dreadlocks.
Marhguy who gained admission to his dream school through the Computer School Placement System to study General Science expressed surprise that the prestigious school focused on his appearance instead of his academics.
Tyrone Iras Marhguy, Rastafarian says he is considering seeking admission at St.John’s Grammar SHS if the Motown Management will not accept him.
Iras Marhguy said Motown was among one of the many Senior High Schools (SHSs) he have always wanted to attend after BECE.
“So I was expecting that they will accept me but then bringing in the hair problem really shocked and surprised,” the first-year student told Citi TV.
According to Tyrone Iras, the Achimota school should have at least consider his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) grade and not the dread.
Tyrone’s father, Tereo Kwame Marhguy who was scandalised by the action of the school disclosed that the Assistant Headmaster at Achimota School affirmed that his son’s hairstyle is against the school’s policy on the length of hair students are permitted to grow. Watch the interview below.

This comes after a disappointed father shared on Facebook that his son and one other student have been allegedly denied admission into Achimota School because of their dreadlocks.
The father identified as Ras Aswad Nkrabeah revealed that the authorities of Achimota School claimed it is against the rules of the school to admit students with dreadlocks.
