Obrafour’s mother has played a crucial role in his music career

The Asem Sebe hitmaker was born to Mrs. Gladys Agyapomaa and Mr. Kwaku Okyere Darko in Obo, Kwahu. His mother was a chorister in an Adventist Church.

His musical influence came from his mother. While in high school, he put together a quartet that sang gospel songs.

At a very young age, he would perform with his mother in the church and has celebrated the role of motherhood throughout his career.

Sadly, he lost his mother in 1995 after one term at St. Peter’s Boys Senior High School when as he was preparing for his A levels. You can imagine the pain he endured to pass his exams at that time. He however continued to pursue his education till he completed Senior High School. Michael Elliot known professionally as Obrafour wanted to become a lawyer which failed after his mother’s death.

He made a bold switch from Gospel to secular music after a friend named Quincy introduced him to rap. Later on, he attended auditions and performance sessions and met Hammer who was then an amateur beatmaker. Hammer facilitated a deal between Obrafour and Abraham Ohene Djan (OM Studios) and in the latter part of 1999, Pae Mu Ka, his debut album was released. On November 9, 2019, he commemorated the 20th anniversary of the album at the ‘Pae Mu Ka’ concert at the Accra Intentional Conference Centre.

Obrafour is suing Canadian rapper Drake for $10 million for sampling his song without his consent

Legendary Ghanaian rapper Obrafour is suing popular Canadian rapper Drake for sampling his 2003 remix of ‘Oye Ohene’ on his song ‘Calling My Name’ off the Honestly Nevermind album.

In June 2022, Canadian rapper, Drake surprised his fans with ‘Honestly, Nevermind’ but for Ghanaians, it was a double surprise.

On Track 6, ‘Calling My Name’, Drake sampled a beloved popular song from one of Ghana’s best musicians alive, Obrafour.

The sample is found at 0:53 seconds of the Drake tune, where it transitions into a house music vibe sending the song into a different type of ambiance compared to its initial trajectory.

“Killa cut!” is the chant heard multiple times.

That part was sung by Mantse Aryeequaye as an opener to the late 2003 remix of ‘Oye Ohene’ off the Ntete Pa album.

In the documents presented to a court in New York, Obrafour stated that Drake infringed on his copyright when he sampled his song without permission.

The Ghanaian rapper indicated that Drake and other defendants following the release of ‘Calling My Name’ has greatly benefited from his work.

Among others, Obrafour is seeking damages in an amount not less than $10,000,000. (Read more about what exactly happened between Drake and Obrafour here)
