Rapper Sarkodie once revealed he will never apologise to Ghanaians for smoking amid his cigar addiction. But why does he smoke nowadays?
Multiple award-winning rapper Michael Owusu Addo known in the music industry as Sarkodie is a Ghanaian rapper, songwriter, and entrepreneur from Tema.
The rapper is among the most respected Ghanaian public figures with a career spanning 10 years at the top of his game.
Sarkodie’s music career was influenced by American rappers such as Ja Rule, Tupac, Biggie, 50 Cent, Nelly, and more that filled the airwaves in his hometown of Tema, Ghana.
The rapper shocked Ghanaians with his recurring use of cigars as his smoking habit led both industry gatekeepers, and his fans to blast him for supposedly being a bad influence on the youth by “smoking” cigars in his recent photos.
Others discredited the idea that the rapper secretly smokes but due to his brand, he doesn’t make it known publicly in order not to tarnish the name of his brand.

Speaking about his latest lifestyle of smoking, the rapper disclosed that he never had assumed that he would love cigars let alone be seen blowing it out publicly. He confirmed that he is now a lover of cigars and loves smoking as well.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Firestick, Sarkodie disclosed why he has chosen to smoke. According to him, he acclimated to the attitude of smoking because he has a problem with making decisions.
Sarkodie further added that growing up smoking wasn’t what he wanted for himself but as time goes on and his brand grows, he had to reconsider his choices and start smoking.
“I don’t trust myself…I never thought I would be smoking cigars, but look at me now, I smoke” he said.
Although he reckons that smoking a cigar is a bad act, Sarkodie intimated that he wasn’t a habitual smoker and when asked if he will apologise to his fans and Ghanaians at large for being a bad influence, he revealed “Don’t tell me to apologize for smoking cigar” in an interview he had on Hitz FM.
Sarkodie has a reason for smoking in his videos and pictures and it has something to do with his success.
Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM on the Daybreak Hitz show, Sarkodie debunked claims of being a smoker behind cameras.
According to him, the reason behind holding cigars in his recent photos is just to signify his success and achievements in the industry.
Sarkodie also revealed that the perception some Ghanaians have about him with regard to smoking can never be changed, thus he cannot do anything to impress anyone.
