Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride married Andrew Cray and lost him to death in the same year. What happened to her husband and does she have any kids?

Delaware State Sen. Sarah McBride on Monday (June 26, 2023) announced her run for the state’s only U.S. House seat — a campaign that, if successful, would make her the first transgender person in U.S. Congress.

In an announcement video, the 32-year-old Democrat said her commitment “is to the people in Delaware who aren’t seen, who don’t shout the loudest or fund political campaigns. Parents busy raising their children, seniors worried about paying prescription drugs, and working people struggling to keep up. Everyone deserves a member of Congress who sees them and who respects them.”

Delaware’s only U.S. House seat is currently occupied by Democrat Lisa Blunt Rochester, who announced last week that she is running for Senate.

Now, a lot of people are in an inquisition to know more about her personal, especially regarding her love, and dating side. Like, who is married to and whether she has any kids? Read on for more.

Who is Sarah McBride married to?

Sarah McBride is an American activist and politician who has been a Democratic member of the Delaware Senate since January 2021. She was previously the National Press Secretary of the Human Rights Campaign.

She was born on August 9, 1990, in Wilmington, Delaware, United States to parents Sally McBride, and David McBride. She earned a bachelor’s degree from American University in 2013 and also attended the Cab Calloway School of the Arts.

In 2020, McBridge made history by becoming the first openly transgender official ever elected to a U.S. state Senate. She had previously become the first openly transgender person to serve in the White House, as an intern in President Barack Obama’s administration beginning in 2012.

In 2016, she spoke at the Democratic National Convention, receiving a standing ovation as the first openly transgender person to address a major party’s convention.

So, who is Sarah McBride’s husband? Sarah McBride was married to political activist Andrew Cray. Cray was an American activist who championed constitutional protection in the LGBTQ+ community.

He worked closely with the Department of Health and Human Services to create the Out2Enroll initiative. His plan was to connect LGBTQ+ people with health insurance coverage options.

Cray also worked closely with the White House to secure protections for the LGBTQ+ community in the Affordable Care Act.

He was a founding member of Trans Legal Advocates of Washington, which trains attorneys on transgender legal issues and operates pro bono legal clinics for transgender clients.

Cray and McBride reportedly bumped into each other at the White House in June 2012. Two months later, Cray asked Sarah out for coffee and drinks via a Facebook message.

The couple found that they shared a lot in common other than their transgender histories – Sarah had come out as a transgender female several months prior, while Andrew identified as a transgender male.

In September 2013, Andrew was diagnosed with oral cancer. A month later, he had an extensive 12-hour surgery to remove part of his tongue and eliminate the cancerous cells; chemotherapy and radiation followed the procedure. His tongue was reconstructed with tissue from his arm, and as a result, he had to relearn how to talk and eat.

3 months after a cancer-free declaration, bloodwork revealed that Andrew’s cancer had returned and spread to the lungs.

After the diagnosis, Andy asked Sarah: “If it turns out incurable, would you marry me?”

Sarah McBride married Andy on 24th August 2014, but Cray passed away four days later.

President Obama posthumously awarded Cray as a Champion of Change for his contributions to LGBTQ+ health.

In addition to Obama’s recognition, the Cray family established the Andrew Cray Memorial Scholarship to support LGBTQ+ young people in their post-secondary life.

More on Sara McBride’s sexuality

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2020, McBride said her tenure at the White House helped cement her belief in the importance of representation and “having a seat at the table.”

Noting that “gender is not what makes me qualified to be a Senator or what makes me unqualified to be a Senator,” McBride told People (the TV Show!) that she still understood the “profound message” that her campaign and election win can send to the LGBTQ community.

“It reflects a deeper truth that the only way for us to craft solutions that meet the needs of a diverse community is to have the full diversity of that community at the table,” McBride said in the earlier interview. “That’s true in business. It’s true in technology. And it’s certainly true in government.”

Mara Keisling, the executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, told PEOPLE in an earlier interview that McBride is “smart, she’s a great public speaker and a great possibility model for young people. And she’s always cared about public service.”

McBride’s candidacy for Congress comes as transgender people and the greater LGBTQ+ community work to push back against laws in Republican legislatures that target everything from healthcare to education.

According to the ACLU, some 491 anti-LGBTQ bills are now making their way through legislatures across the U.S. and target everything from which restrooms transgender people can use to how they can access medically-necessary health care, like Medicaid.
