Robert Downey Jr. is ‘Iron Man’ in real life; nothing can separate him from his family. Let’s meet his current partner Susan, his ex-wife Falconer, and his three children; two sons and a daughter.

Robert John Downey Jr. is an American producer and one of the most accomplished actors of his generation. His career has been characterized by critical and popular success in his youth, followed by a period of substance abuse and legal troubles, before a resurgence of commercial success later in his career.

Robert Downey Jr. is probably best known for his role as Iron Man, a role which lifted him out of his downward spiral and helped him achieve superstar status again following his troubles with addiction.

His name shortened as RDJ, he had a close relationship with his father who introduced him to the acting business at the age of five in the film Pound (1970), written and directed by his father, Robert Downey Sr.

He is also known to have been married twice and had children from his relationships so far, so, what is to be known about his personal life: who is his current partner and how many children does he have? Read on for more.

Who is Robert Downey Jr. married to?

Robert Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York, United States to father Robert Downey Sr., and mother Elsie Ford. His parents were supportive of his career especially his dad, who was an actor and a director himself.

Downey Sr. worked in the film industry from the sixties up until the last decade of his life. He was known for creating fearless, boldly weird movies that likely wouldn’t see the screen today like Putney Swope.

Just like RDJ has had Indio act as a younger version of himself, in the past Robert Downey Sr. helped his son get started in the acting business.

His father Robert Downey Sr. died in July of 2021 at age 85 due to complications following a long battle with Parkinson’s.

Robert Downey Jr began acting when he was five and has appeared in over 70 films throughout his career.

Perhaps most famous for his iconic performance as “Tony Stark/Iron Man,” Downey impressed both critics and mass audiences with his portrayal of the Marvel superhero. The original “Iron Man” (2008) earned more than $585 million, making it one of the year’s biggest hits. Downey returned for the successful sequels “Iron Man 2″ (2010) and “Iron Man 3″ (2013), the highest-grossing film of the year. He also reprised the role in “The Avengers” (2012), which is the fourth highest-grossing film in cinema history. Downey most recently appeared in the sequel “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015) and can next be seen in the highly anticipated Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” slated for a May 2016 release.

A two-time Academy Award nominee, Downey is the winner of 3 Golden Globe awards. He won a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in the acclaimed biopic Chaplin (1992). Downey earned his second Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actor, for his work in Ben Stiller’s comedy hit “Tropic Thunder” (2008). His performance as Kirk Lazarus, a white Australian actor playing a black American character, also brought him Golden Globe, BAFTA Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations that year.  Other recent film credits include: “The Judge” (2014), which Downey and his wife, Susan, produced through their production company, Team Downey; “Sherlock Holmes” (2009), for which he won a Golden Globe; and its successful follow-up, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (2011).

The versatile Downey also released his debut album, “The Futurist” (2004), containing eight original songs.

When Downey Jr. is not acting, he comes home to his beautiful family; he is a responsible husband and a father.

But, who is Robert Downey Jr.’s wife? The famed actor is not single but a married man. He has been in two marriages in his entire; first to Deborah Falconer (from 1992 to 2004) and now to Susan Downey from 2005 to the present.

Unlike many other actors, Downey Jr. has been in a few relationships – all with his fellow Hollywood co-stars he meets on set. But, two of his three relationships ended due to his drug addiction and arrests.

Downey married actress and singer Deborah Falconer on May 29, 1992, after a 42-day courtship. The strain on their marriage from Downey’s repeated trips to rehab and jail finally reached a breaking point; in 2001, in the midst of Downey’s last arrest and sentencing to an extended stay in rehab, Falconer left Downey and took their son with her. Downey and Falconer finalized their divorce on April 26, 2004.

In 2003, Downey met producer Susan Levin, an executive vice president of production at Joel Silver’s film company, Silver Pictures, on the set of Gothika. Though Susan twice turned down his romantic advances, she and Downey did quietly strike up a romance during production. Despite Susan’s worries that the romance would not last after the completion of the shooting given that “he’s an actor; I have a real job”, the couple’s relationship continued after production wrapped on Gothika, and Downey proposed to Susan on the night before her thirtieth birthday. In August 2005, the couple was married, in a Jewish ceremony, at Amagansett, New York. A tattoo on one of his biceps reads “Suzie Q” in tribute to her.

Before meeting his ex and current partners, Downey started dating actress Sarah Jessica Parker in 1984 after meeting her on the set of Firstborn. The couple later separated in 1991 due to his drug addiction.

How many kids does Robert Downey Jr. have?

Robert Downey Jr. is a father of three children; two sons and a daughter from all two of his marriages. The names of his kids are Indio Falconer Downey, Exton Elias, and Avri Roel.

RDJ had his first child, Indio, in September 1993 when he was still married to his first wife, Falconer. He had his second, Exton, and third, Avril, with his second and current partner, Susan.

Robert Downey Sr. is loved dearly by his son, who celebrated his passing through filmmaking which he probably appreciated. However, many of his family’s problems may have also originated with him. Robert Downey Sr. had a drug habit and a history that resembles his son’s. He reportedly allowed RDJ to smoke weed by the age of six. With an upbringing like that as well as a penchant for showbusiness and the culture of Hollywood and no wonder Jr.’s thirties were such a hard time for him, arrested multiple times on drug-related charges.

Downey’s son Indio has been in trouble for cocaine possession in 2020 as well. Even though Robert Downey Jr.’s clean, it seems his family’s genetics might incline them more easily to addiction. Besides, they do still live in a Hollywood culture where drugs are easy to procure. It’s likely that ‘Sr.’ will touch on this, as well as provide history and context into their lives. That background may provide some reasons for the drug use and give some interesting insight into the cult director’s life.

Downey’s only daughter Avri is only 9 years old, his second son Exton is 11, and Indio is 29. RDJ was only 31 when he hit rock bottom in his acting career, but now he’s 58 and in a great position.
