A woman was shot dead in her home in a California neighborhood on Thursday night (August 3rd, 2023), and her husband, Judge Jeff Ferguson, was taken into police custody after the shooting occurred.
The incident in Orange County, California came following reports of at least one gunshot from inside their home.
What did Judge Jeffrey Ferguson do?
Orange County Superior Court judge Jeffrey Ferguson has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his wife, Sheryl Ferguson, at their home in Anaheim Hills.
According to the Anaheim Police Department, officers arrived at the property just after 8pm.
Upon their arrival, they found Sheryl Ferguson deceased.
Neighbors reported that they saw the judge being detained by authorities.
The Anaheim police sergeant told local ABC affiliate KABC: “Upon officer’s arrival, they located one deceased victim and ultimately detained one suspect that suspect was ultimately arrested and our homicide detectives are on scene investigating the incident now.”
The police department has confirmed the identities of the victim and her alleged attacker after holding the information for some time.
In a press release, the Anaheim Police Department wrote: “Homicide detectives have arrested 72-year-old Anaheim resident Jeffrey Ferguson for the murder of his wife.
“Upon officers’ arrival, they located 65-year-old Sheryl Ferguson inside the residence suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
“Sheryl Ferguson was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
It continues: “Officers contacted Jeffrey Ferguson, an Orange County Superior Court Judge, at the location and arrested him for murder without incident.
“Jeffrey Ferguson was booked into the Anaheim Police Department’s Detention Facility in lieu of $1 million bail.
“Detectives are not disclosing any additional details at this time because the investigation is ongoing.”
Who is Judge Jeffrey Ferguson?
Judge Ferguson has served in the Orange County Superior Court since 2015.
He previously served for over 30 years with the Orange County district attorney’s office where he worked on the Major Narcotics Enforcement Team.
During his successful career, Ferguson has been named prosecutor of the year four times by the Orange County Narcotics Officers Association.
When he married his deceased wife, and where they had their wedding are yet to be disclosed.

Bewildered neighbors said Jeff Ferguson and his wife Shirley were often seen out walking their dog together.
While Jeff is 72, his longtime late partner was 65 when she died.
