Canadian rapper Daystar Peterson, better known by his stage name Tory Lanez, has been making the rounds lately in the aftermath of a horrific shooting that left singer Megan Thee Stallion wounded, though luckily, the “Savage” singer/rapper recovered fully.
Fans of the “Hot Girl Summer” artist have been trying to piece together the details of what happened following the star-studded Hollywood Hills pool party that Megan and Tory left together, especially considering the fact that Megan has taken to her own social media to clarify some facts that had been misreported.
Some speculate that Tory Lanez, who was in the car with Megan before she got out, was the one who opened fire. This has caused some individuals to wonder whether Megan and Tory Lanez were dating.
Was Tory Lanez dating Megan Thee Stallion?
According to Cheat Sheet, Megan and Tory were secretly dating and broke up before the horrifying incident occurred. The outlet writes that YouTube star Tasha K revealed the “Savage” singer and Tory Lanez had been an item for months.
This tracks with the fact that Megan and Tory were seen hanging out together during the COVID-19 quarantine and practicing TikTok dances. At the time, fans dragged the stars for not taking the stay-at-home orders seriously, though the mid-quarantine hangouts make more sense if the two were in fact dating.
Per Tasha K, Megan kept the relationship a secret out of concern for her image. Following the shooting, Megan’s producer, Lil Juju, warned Tory to “count your f–king days,” though the post has now been deleted.
However, Megan in her interview with CBS News hosted by Gayle King detailed that she and Lanez were never dating but they were bonding together because their mothers had passed. Speaking on whether they had any sexual relationship, Stallion revealed anything of such never happened and that Tory had speculated that to “deflect from the fact that he committed a crime.”
What happened between Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez?
In July 2020, Lanez attended a house party that turned violent, and when police arrived, they found a concealed weapon in his car and arrested him. Megan Thee Stallion was also in the car and suffered an injury to her foot.
Though it was initially reported that broken glass had caused the injury, Megan later revealed that it was actually a gunshot wound and that Tory was the shooter.
“The narrative that is being reported about Sunday’s morning events are inaccurate and I’d like to set the record straight,” Megan wrote, revealing that she had “suffered gunshot wounds” on Sunday morning, “as a result of a crime that was committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me.”
“I was never arrested, the police officers drove me to the hospital where I underwent surgery to remove the bullets,” she continued. “I’m incredibly grateful to be alive and that I’m expected to make a full recovery, but it was important for me to clarify the details about this traumatic night. I’m currently focused on my recovery, so I can return to my life and back to making music as soon as possible.”
According to TMZ, Tory was arrested and booked for possession of a concealed weapon, and stands to be investigated for assault with a deadly weapon.
“Sources connected to Tory say it seems he will claim it was accidental … IF he’s charged for the shooting,” writes the outlet. “The fact LAPD is investigating it as assault with a deadly weapon — as opposed to attempted homicide — could mean they, at least in theory, believe it was accidental.”
As for Megan, she is “hurt and traumatized” by the events and taking some time to recover. “Black women are so unprotected & we hold so many things in to protect the feelings of others w/o considering our own,” she tweeted on July 17. “It might be funny to y’all on the internet and just another messy topic for you to talk about but this is my real life and I’m real life hurt and traumatized.”
Megan’s friend, Kelsey Nicole, took to Instagram to clear up any misconception that she had been involved. “I want to clear up the rumors that I shot Megan,” she wrote. “I WASN’T the one with the gun and would never do something like that. However I was present.”
In October 2020 Lanez was charged with three felonies including assault with a semiautomatic firearm. A protective order was issued against him, prohibiting him from contacting Megan or coming within 100 feet of her.
In August 2021, Tory violated the protective order, and his bail was increased to $250,000, up from $190,000.
Tory was convicted in December 2022.

Judge David Herriford had been expected to sentence Lanez Monday at a hearing that usually only takes a few hours, but Herriford had attorneys for both sides argue each factor of his potential sentence, allowing seven witnesses to give statements on Lanez’s charitable contributions, his childhood trauma and being a father to of his 6-year-old son, according to NBC News.
According to The Associated Press, at the start of Monday’s proceedings, Lanez had over 70 submitted letters of support, including a note from “Fancy” rapper Iggy Azalea to Judge Herriford asking for leniency “that was transformative, not life-destroying” when determining his sentence. “I am not in support of throwing away anyone’s life if we can give reasonable punishments that are rehabilitative instead. I support prison reform. Period,” she later wrote on Twitter.
Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, looked “stoic” in court on Monday and Tuesday, according to a source. He spoke for several minutes before the judge handed down his decision, asking for leniency and for a sentence that would allow him to “prove” himself, Rolling Stone reported.
“If I could turn back the series of events that night and change them, I would,” Lanez says, according to The Associated Press. “The victim was my friend. The victim is someone I still care for to this day.” He added, “Everything I did wrong that night, I take full responsibility for.” The rapper was given about 10 months of credit for time he’s served since his conviction in December, The Associated Press noted.
Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, who was present in the gallery on Monday, grew emotional as he described his son losing his mother Luella at age 11 to a rare blood disorder, according to The Associated Press. As he continued, Peterson choked back tears as he apologized in court to Judge Herriford for his outburst last year in court.
“I want to personally apologize to you,” Sonstar told the judge, AP reported. “It was an overwhelming time.” Back then, pandemonium erupted as Sonstar lunged toward prosecution after his son was convicted. He pointed and shouted, “This wicked system! You are wicked, you are evil. Shame on all of you!” before he was removed from the courtroom.

Megan Thee Stallion who was not present in court at the hearing for the Canadian rapper’s sentencing but had some choice words for Tory Lanez at his sentencing.
Rolling Stone reported that prosecutors read a pre-written statement on Monday.
Megan wrote that he should be held fully accountable for his actions, including further traumatizing her following the incident.
“I struggle with being present. After everything that occurred I cannot bring myself back to being in the same room with Tory,” Megan wrote in the statement read by Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kathy Ta. “I’ve been tormented and terrorized.”
“He paid bloggers to disseminate false information, he treated my trauma like a joke when I could’ve been dead,” she continued. “He blamed the system, he blamed the press, and as of late he is using his childhood trauma to justify his actions.”
She added, “Slowly but surely, I’m healing. But I’ll never be the same. His crime warrants the full weight of the law.”
