Mary-Louise McLaws, born March 17, 1953, was a leading Australian epidemiologist who dedicated her career to preventing diseases.

McLaws worked as a professor of epidemiology at the University of New South Wales School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

She also served as World Health Organisation (WHO) adviser to China and helped with infection-control research in Cambodia, Bangladesh, Mali, Indonesia, Iran, Vietnam, Taiwan and Turkey.

Aside from this, the late professor provided invaluable advice to Australians during the Covid pandemic.

She became a household name during the pandemic, advising on the best course of action during countless media interviews in both Australia and across the globe.

In 2022, McLaws was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia in the General Division for ”distinguished service to medical research, particularly to epidemiology and infection prevention, to tertiary education, and to health administration.”
