Stephanie Fernandes, a mother of one was dating her then boyfriend Andrew Wagner. The duo who got engaged reportedly had a toxic relationship.

In an uncontrolled situation, the mom stabbed her fiancé and claimed it was self-defense in court.

Her then 11-year-old daughter woke up from her sleep and witnessed a crime scene involving her mother and her mother’s late fiancé.

What did Stephanie Fernandes do to her fiancé, Andrew Wagner?

Stephanie Fernandes, a mother of one and Andrew “Andy” Wagner met in 2009 when her daughter, Angelina, was just six years old. The couple reportedly had a troubled relationship. The duo dated for years and got engaged in 2012.

CBS News’ 48 Hours interviewed the alleged murderer’s daughter who in her early 20s in March 2023, where she shared exactly what ensued.

Angelina said her mom’s relationship with Andrew progressed quickly and they were soon all living together.

While Angelina recalled Andrew being friendly, his relationship with her mom was not perfect.

She recalled telling her mom once: “I know what’s going on between you two, and I don’t like it. You guys need to stop. It can’t happen anymore.” 

On May 7, 2014, Angelina Fernandes was put to bed by her mom, Stephanie Fernandes. When she awoke, her life changed forever.

“I just hear my mom screaming and crying,” Angelina said when recalling the moment she woke up to CBS’s 48 Hours.

Angelina said she looked downstairs and saw blood everywhere.

A neighbor was performing CPR on her mom’s fiancé, Andrew Wagner, who Angelina called her stepdad, she recalled.

Stephanie saw Angelina on the stairs and yelled for someone to get her 11-year-old daughter, according to Angelina.

When authorities arrived, an officer took Angelina to a relative’s house.

“I just remember wanting to make sure my mom was OK because I didn’t know where she went. She was just taken,” Angelina said.

On the night of his death (on May 7, 2014), Andrew and Stephanie got into a fight about what she had been doing that week when he was away at work, Stephanie told 48 Hours.

Andrew pinned her against a couch and tried to strangle her, Stephanie recalled.

So she said she grabbed a kitchen knife and told Andrew to stay away.

Andrew came at her with a headbutt motion and the knife “must have nicked his neck,” Stephanie said.

His autopsy revealed that he bled to death after he was stabbed in the neck, according to the outlet.

Although the incident transpired that year, the investigation didn’t go to trial for seven years because of procedural arguments and later covid-19 complications.

On March 11, 2023, Stephanie’s case was revisited in an episode of 48 Hours titled What Angelina Saw.

Where is Stephanie Fernandes now?

On June 23, 2022, a jury found Stephanie Fernandes guilty of voluntary manslaughter.

Despite the dismissal of her initial murder charge, Stephanie was sentenced to 8-10 years in prison on October 14 of the same year.

Throughout the case, she maintained her innocence and insisted Andrew’s death was in self-defense.

She is serving her sentence at Massachusetts Correctional Institution Framingham; she’ll be eligible for parole in 2026.

Where is Angelina Fernandes now?

Angelina Fernandes was living with family in Canada and attending school while her mother was in jail. Following her mother Stephanie’s trial, Angelina went to college to study forensic psychology.

Angelina hopes to one day focuse her career on working with crime victims in court and with children.

When speaking about the day her mom will be released from prison, Angelina said: “Well, at first, I was thinking, ‘Wow, I’m gonna be close to 30 years old.’ I mean, she’s missed so much of my life already.”

While expressing her anticipation of eventually reuniting with her mother, Angelina told Peter Van Sant via 48 Hours: “When she’s out of jail, she’ll be able to see all of my successes.

“She’ll be able to see everything that I’ve accomplished.

“I want to accomplish all of my dreams so my mom can experience happiness afterward.”

Regarding her mother’s prison sentence, she said: “He [Andrew Wagner] was abusive and my mom was his victim.

“His family is going to believe what they want to believe.

“I can’t imagine the pain they’re going through. I don’t think they want to see their deceased son that way.

“So they’re blaming my mom for all of the wrongs he’s done toward her.”
