Per a post shared by the brother of Francis, the Former NFL star died in a plane crash. The crash occurred around 4.09 p.m. EST at the end of the Lake Placid runaway.

Apparently, Russ Francis recently purchased the Lake Placid Airways scenic tour business at the airport.

Russ Francis died alongside the pilot and Richard McSpadden, the organization’s senior vice president of air safety.

Russ Francis and Rich McSpadden were flying the plane out of Lake Placid Airport when the plane experienced a fault after the takeoff.

In an attempt to return to the runaway, they crashed into a ravine near the airport. Russ Francis’s brother, Ed Francis, in a post, confirmed his brother’s death.

Kate Neiman, Francis’ son’s mom, confirmed that his husband had passed away. She wrote, “To Russ, flying was like breathing…it came naturally and he lived for it,”
