Who are Roy Wood Jr.’s parents?

Roy Wood Jr. was born on December 11, 1978, in Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States.

His parents are Roy Wood Sr. (father) and Joyce Dugan Wood (mother).

His paternal three-times great-grandfather, Sam Wood, was born c. 1790 in Africa. His parents separated for a time, and Wood lived with his mother in Memphis, Tennessee. When Wood was in the second grade, his parents reconciled, so the family moved to Birmingham; they lived on South Park Road in Birmingham’s West End neighborhood.

Wood attended Central Park Elementary and Center Street Middle School. He graduated from Ramsay High School in 1996. In 2001, Wood received a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism from Florida A&M University.

What do Roy Wood Jr.’s parents do for a living?

Wood Jr. is not the only one in his family with a background in the entertainment industry.

His father Roy Sr was a renowned journalist commentator, college professor, and entrepreneur.

As a journalist, he covered the civil rights movement; the racism encountered by African-American soldiers in the Vietnam War; the Soweto uprising; and the Rhodesian Bush War, among other topics.

Wood Sr., from Birmingham, Alabama, was well-known for being the co-founder of the National Black Network, the first national radio network owned by Black Americans to produce programming specifically for African Americans.

He died on October 15, 1995, in Birmingham, Alabama.

There isn’t much public information about his mother Joyce. However, she is known to have worked as a school administrator. She worked at a college institution.

Roy Wood Jr. was an only child to his mother and father, however, on his father’s side, he is his second son.

Before Wood Sr. married the comedian’s mom, he already had a child with his ex-partner who would become his elder half-brother.

He is a former television news anchor, a public relations manager, and the Democratic candidate for Jefferson County Commission District 4 in the 2010 general election.

He grew up in Chicago and earned his bachelor’s in mass communications at Southern Illinois University. He worked for ABC and NBC stations in Detroit, Chicago, New York, and Boston before coming to WVTM-TV as an anchor and reporter in the mid-1980s.

Per BhamWiki, Wood served as director of marketing and public relations for the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority and, while there, established Jefferson County’s first Citizens Transit Advisory Board. He is also an avid model railroader.

In 2010, Wood ran unopposed in the Democratic primary to fill the District 4 seat left open when four-term incumbent and Commission President Bettye Fine Collins decided not to run for re-election. He lost to Joe Knight in the November 2 general election.
