Not even our favorite celebrities are immune from experiencing health woes — and many of them are opening up about their battles in an effort to inform and inspire others who might be going through the same illnesses.

Selena Gomez’s health issues have been well-documented over the years. The “My Mind & Me” singer has been candid about her mental health struggles, which even led to her entering rehab in 2018. In September 2017, she underwent a secret life-changing kidney surgery following complications from her long battle with lupus.

Amy Schumer revealed in April 2018 that she had been hospitalized over a kidney infection. Schumer welcomed her son, Gene, with husband Chris Fischer the following year. Prior to giving birth, she experienced pregnancy complications due to hyperemesis gravidarum, which is a severe form of morning sickness.

Then you do it every year and it was fine for five years. In 2020, I was back in Sweden and had some kind of acid reflux. So I did an MRI, and they found that there were a few more tumors around that area.”

“Three and half years ago I was in the middle of a tour, and I finally ended it with a show. I said, ‘You know, I’m at the top of my game, after 50 years almost I’m going to call it quits,’ and I felt great about that,” Lewis explained to fans via a video on Twitter. “And then, out of the blue, the s–t hit the fan. I had four surgeries back-to-back-to-back-to-back. It was incredible, I couldn’t believe it. It was bad luck, but that’s life. I had a back surgery, then I had a shoulder surgery, then I had a shoulder replacement surgery. … then I had a hip replacement. So there was months when I was just focusing on PT [physical therapy], like I am now.”

The Curb Your Enthusiasm star continued: “On top of all of that, two years ago, I started walking a little stiffly. I was shuffling my feet. I went to a neurologist, and they gave me a brain scan, and I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. That was about two years ago. But luckily, I got it late in life, and they say you progress very slowly if at all. And I’m on the right meds so I’m cool.”

After her physician asked her, “How did you live with this much pain?” the words were exactly what the animal advocate needed to hear. “Validation for years of pain is indescribable,” she shared.

Dion, for her part, explained that she has “a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better and my precious children, who are supporting me and giving me hope.” The Canada native also revealed she is working with a “sports medicine therapist” and feels she is on the “road to recovery.”

I’ve seen firsthand the devastation that cancer can have on families, on children, and on all of our loved ones. It can bring you to your knees. It’s physically and emotionally exhausting. It robs you of so many things, including life itself for some of the most unfortunate patients. I never lose sight of that, and that’s why I feel so lucky.”

After beating prostate cancer, the NBA legend called out the racial inequality in U.S. health care in a December 2020 WebMD essay. “While I’m grateful for my advantages, I’m acutely aware that many others in the Black community do not have the same options and that it is my responsibility to join with those fighting to change that. Because Black lives are at risk. Serious risk,” he wrote.

The Little House on the Prairie alum shared an update in November 2020 after undergoing her fourth spinal procedure. “Surgery was wildly successful!” she captioned a photo from the hospital. “Dr Bray was able to remove all the old hardware, shave off bone spurs causing numbness in my right hand and, and, and, he was able to give me the artificial disc!!! So now I focus on recovery and remaining Covid free. Thank you all for your love, support and prayers. I send so much love back to you all. Happy Thanksgiving indeed!!! Love and love and love…MG #discsportandspine #artificial disc #grateful#blessed #loveiseverything.” The actress revealed earlier in the month that her third spinal fusion surgery — which she’d had in 2016 after previous procedures in 2001 and 2010 — had failed and that she had “reached the point where the pain is nearly constant and the fingers on my right hand are beginning to tingle.” Gilbert referenced her character from the popular 1970s series and wrote that she was “channeling my inner Halfpint for this one. The one who believes anything is possible. The one with courage and moxie to spare!!”

The Three’s Company alum underwent neck surgery in October 2020 after injuring herself while falling down stairs. “As most of you know, I have been struggling for the better part of the year with a fractured hip, and then Alan and I took an unfortunate fall while coming down the stairs at our home,” she wrote across her official website and social media pages. “I had an intense amount of pain after the fall that was not resolving — even after having tequila! After several scans, it was determined I had 2 vertebrae out of place which was causing pressure on nerves and creating that tremendous pain.”

Sommers added, “The good news is that I had neck surgery to correct these issues and now I am on the mend. I need a bit more time to recover before I can join you again at the bar for our virtual cocktail parties.”

In October 2020, the singer announced that he had a successful kidney transplant last winter. “Let everybody know that I was blessed with a new kidney and that happened on Dec. 6, 2019,” he shared during a press conference. “Since I have been released from the hospital, I’ve had nurses that have made sure I have my medicine on time and I’m going to take it for as long as I have to — even if it’s for the rest of my life.”

He continued: “I feel great. My voice feels great. I told my daughter, ‘Aisha, I’m going to be like five years younger than you now.’ I said, ‘I’m gonna go from being 70 to like 40.’ I feel like I’m about 40 right now and I just thank everyone for their prayers and love. I’m feeling great.”

In October 2020, the Wanted band member revealed that he was diagnosed with stage IV glioblastoma, which is an aggressive form of cancer.

“Hey guys, you know that we’ve both been quiet on social media for a few weeks and it’s time to tell you why. There’s no easy way to say this but I’ve sadly been diagnosed with a Brain Tumour and I’m already undergoing treatment,” he wrote via Instagram. “We decided, after a lot of thought, that rather than hiding away and trying to keep it a secret, we would do one interview where we could lay out all the details and let everyone know the facts in our own way.”

The “Glad You Came” singer continued, “We are all absolutely devastated but we are gonna fight this all the way. We don’t want your sadness, we just want love and positivity and together we will raise awareness of this terrible disease and look for all available treatment options. It’s gonna be a tough battle but with everyone’s love and support we are going to beat this.”

The Flipping Out star updated fans on his successful spinal cord surgery in August 2020 after sharing his experience with cervical myelopathy, a progressive degenerative condition. “Here’s my biggest concern: I’m going to have a two-inch incision in the front of my neck, which is probably going to scar,” Lewis said on his radio show ahead of his surgery. “What am I going to do? Am I going to wear turtlenecks? Do I wear a mock turtle? I don’t think I can pull off scarves.”
