Actor and director Simon Elrahi has died after a short illness sparking an outpouring of grief.

It is understood he was receiving treatment after becoming ill this year and passed away suddenly.

At the moment, no cause of death has been revealed. 

Kriv Stenders, who made the hit movie Red Dog, led the heartfelt tributes on social media. Mr Stenders wrote;

‘Utterly shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of Simon Elrahi. Simon was a beautiful actor who I had the pleasure and privilege of working with on a number of occasions over the years. I’m just gutted that I will never get the chance to collaborate with him again. Simon … you were a wonderful soul who was loved and will be missed by so many.’

Model and Housos star Victoria Ferrera said she was ‘devastated to hear’ he passed away.

‘I’m sorry I didn’t call often and catch up with you. Just want to say how much of a pleasure it was working with you. You were so kind, you treated me with so much respect. I had so many great memories with you and I am sad I can’t experience this again. I miss you.’

Actor Salvatore Coco, who starred in Underbelly: The Golden Mile and East-West 101, described Mr Elahi as ‘a humble, kind, funny, charismatic legend’.

‘What certain is that we remember this legend and thank God that he gave us time with him. Simon I’m going to miss your laugh, humour, witty and passion for acting and advice.’

Author and radio host Michael El-Bacha said working with him on The Combination Redemption was ‘an honour’

‘I am devastated to hear the passing of my dear friend Simon Elrahi. RIP and fly high.’

Actor George Basha said ‘not only was he a great actor who has worked on so many productions but was even greater human being.’

‘My heart is broken. Simon Elrahi. Rest in peace you generous soul,’ said Nola Bartolo, writer and actor.

Vietnamese-Australian actor, filmmaker, and martial arts star Maria Tran said she was ‘deeply saddened’ at his passing.

‘A brilliant and versatile artist, Simon’s contributions to our projects were invaluable, and his presence will be sorely missed.’

Other friends and colleagues described him as ‘an absolute legend, great actor and hilarious in person’ and ‘such a kind funny soul’.

‘He was the loveliest human and always made everyone around feel great,’ said another.

Who was Simon Elrahi?

Simon Elrahi was a passionate Australian film and television writer, director, and actor.

Mr Elrahi was best known for his roles in the John Ibrahim drama Last King of the Cross and the gritty urban crime movie The Combination: Redemption.

Mr Elahi acted in 52 films and television programs, and in 2022 acted alongside Joel Edgerton in The Stranger.

A graduate of The Actors Centre and Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney, Mr Elrahi worked in Australian television for 30 years and won recognition at home and overseas for his work.

On his social media page for his film production company he wrote, ‘We don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make movies.’ 

The Lebanese Film Festival issued a statement saying ‘It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to a remarkable talent and friend of the festival, Simon Elrahi. 

‘As a much-loved figure in the Australian film industry, Simon’s contributions left an indelible mark on our hearts.’

In 2017 he won several awards for his film Flow, including Best Australian Film at the Sydney Indie Film Festival and the top prize at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards.

Mr Elrahi’s film Joseph’s Lebanese Roll was a finalist at the Los Angeles-based BlueCat screenplay competition and a semi-finalist at the Australia Independent Film Awards in 2019.

His other feature films Understanding Anatomy and Trapped made the semifinals at the Boston Screenplay Awards.

He won the audience award at the 1998 Hawaiian Film Festival.

Mr Elahi was also a trained chiropractor and earned a science degree at the University of Sydney majoring in anatomy, physiology, and human movement.
