Who is Amy Carter?

Amy Lynn Carter, 56, was born on October 19, 1967, in Plains, Georgia, United States.

She is best known as the daughter of the 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and his First Lady Rosalynn Carter.

She is the youngest and only daughter of Jimmy and Rosalynn. She has three siblings – James Carter, Jack Carter, and Donnel Carter.

Carter entered the limelight as a child when she lived in the White House during the Carter presidency.

During her formative years, Amy had a nanny named Mary Prince, who was part of the prisoner trusty system in Georgia. (The trusty system was a U.S. prison program that granted certain privileges to designated inmates.) Prince was wrongly convicted of murder and later pardoned. She went on to babysit for the Carters’ grandchildren.

Amy garnered worldwide attention at just 9 years old when she read books during a state dinner hosting Canada’s Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (father of Justin Trudeau), reported the Washington Post.

Amy earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Memphis College of Art. She later earned a master’s in art history from Tulane University in New Orleans.

Subsequently, she became a known political activist who participated in different sit-ins and protests during the 1980s and early 1990s.

When President Carter’s term ended, Amy moved to Atlanta. In the summer of 1982, she served as a Senate page in Washington, D.C. She graduated from the Woodward Academy and later enrolled at Brown University but was dismissed for poor academic performance in July 1987, according to the Washington Post. Amy went on to get her bachelor’s degree from the Memphis College of Art in 1991 and her master’s in art history from Tulane University in 1996.

Amy was politically active from a young age, participating in numerous protests, including ones against U.S. foreign policy in Central America and apartheid in South Africa. In 1986, Amy and several others were arrested for protesting CIA recruitment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; the New York Times later reported that Amy and 14 other protesters were acquitted of charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing.

In 1995, Amy illustrated her father’s children’s book, The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer.
