Electoral Commission releases a press statement after reports of the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo‘s photos been omitted on ballot papers at Bereku Awutu Senya West.
Thedistin.com had earlier pressed on an electoral officer, at Bereku, Awutu Senya West whose duty is to tear the ballot papers after an electorate has undergone the Covid-19 protocols and haven verified his or her name in the list of eligible voters has been giving out the ballot papers without Nana Addo’s picture on it.
From the report, two electorates have complained about the omission of Nana Addo’s picture on the ballot papers.
The lady in charge when questioned couldn’t alter a word and asked for her boss to return before she could talk on the issue.
However, whether she deliberately omitted Nana Addo’s picture or it was an initial mistake from the Election commission remains unknown for now.
Within some few hours after the news started trending across social media platforms, the EC have reacted in a press statement they released.
According to the press release, the EC have isolated tampered ballot papers with from the ones without any faults or complains.
Also, the EC have revealed that persons who have their hands in involved in the omission of some presidential candidates have been removed from the position and the police are doing further investigations.
The EC Press statement read:
ALLEGED CASES OF TAMPERING WITH PRESIDENTIAL BALLOT PAPERS
Information reaching the Commission indicates that there have been isolated cases of Presidential ballot papers being tampered with in some polling stations in Awutu Senya West and Bawku Central constituencies.
The Commission, working with the Ghana Police Service, has identified the suspected Officers and removed them from post pending further investigations.
The General Public is informed that the Presidential ballot paper for the 2020 General Election has twelve (12) candidates. For a correctly thumb printed ballot to be considered valid and counted, all the Presidential candidates must be on the ballot paper.
The Commission entreats all its Staff and Field Officials to let the truth guide them and integrity preserve them as they continue with this important exercise.
We also urge Political Party and Candidate’s agents and the General Public to be vigilant to ensure a free, fair, credible and transparent election.
