Who was George Tyndall?

George Tyndall was an American gynecologist who worked at the University of Southern California.

He was born between 1948/1949, in Plattsburgh, New York.

While details about his parents aren’t known, he has four siblings. He had some French ancestry on his mother’s side.

Growing up, he attended the State University of New York Plattsburgh but discontinued his studies to join the Navy in 1967.

While in the Navy, he was sent to the Defense Language Institute in Monterey to study Vietnamese, a language that was in high demand for the American Intelligence efforts during the Vietnam War. He was eventually stationed in Manila in the Philippines. Tyndall learned Tagalog during this time.

In 1971, Tyndall was honorably discharged from the Navy and resumed studies at the State University of New York, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Disgraced doctor, Tyndall served as the only full-time gynecologist at the USC Engemann Student Health Center for nearly 30 years and had patients as young as 18.

In 2019 he was under investigation in the Los Angeles Police Department’s largest investigation of sexual abuse by a single perpetrator.

He was set to go to trial on 27 criminal counts of sexual misconduct between 2009 and 2016 at USC’s student health center when he died.

What was George Tyndall’s cause of death?

Dr. George Tyndall, who was accused of sexually abusing hundreds of women, was found dead at his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, his lawyer said.

A complete autopsy is in the works.

There is no evidence of foul play or suicide, Tyndall’s attorney, Leonard Levine, told the Associated Press.

“I’m not happy that he died,” Audry Nafziger, a former patient of Tyndall who accused him of inappropriately touching her, told the Los Angeles Times.

“I wanted to see him convicted for what he did.”

What did George Tyndall do?

Tyndall had pleaded not guilty for the crimes that allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2015 at the college’s student health center.

He was accused of photographing patients’ genitals, touching women inappropriately during pelvic exams, and other forceful behavior.

Tyndall, who was out on bail, was expected to appear in court later this month to set a date for his trial.

He faced up to 64 years in prison if convicted.

Hundreds of women came forward to report their sexual assault claims to police, but some cases fell outside the 10-year statute of limitation.

Other claims failed to meet the criteria for prosecution due to a lack of evidence.

The University of Southern California agreed to a $1.1 billion settlement with more than 700 women who sued the college, holding it accountable for Tyndall’s actions.

Tyndall wasn’t suspended from the university until 2016 and quietly resigned the following year with a large payout.

He turned over his medical license in September 2019.

“From the very beginning, Dr. Tyndall had adamantly denied every one of the charges against him,” Levine told the Associated Press.

“All he ever wanted was his day in court, which he was confident would end in his complete exoneration.

“Now, neither he nor his accusers will get that, and that is very unfortunate for everyone involved.”

In June 2019, USC agreed to a $215 million class-action settlement for tens of thousands of women. Amounts vary from $2,500 to $250,000 and will be compensated based on the severity of the misconduct and the patient’s willingness to provide written statements or interviews with mental health professionals.

On March 25, 2021, USC and a group of 710 women suing the school announced that they had reached an $852 million settlement, the largest sexual abuse settlement against any university. This brought the total value of the settlements to nearly $1.1 billion, per TheSun.
