Who is Edwin Castro? The lottery winner has a rags-to-riches story
Edwin Castro is a California man who made headlines in 2022 after he won $2 billion playing the Powerball lottery.
Before shooting to fame for his historic win, which is the second highest amount to be won, Castro lived a modest life before achieving a net worth that rivals celebrities like Cristiano Ronaldo, Madonna, and Tom Cruise.
As a child, he was an Eagle Scout who enjoyed frequent fishing trips with his family in La Crescenta and went on to study architecture at Woodbury University in Burbank.
Castro grew up in the public school system and was sure to point out that the California Lottery supports the state’s K-12 schools.
“As much as I am shocked and ecstatic to have won the Powerball drawing, the real winner is the California public school system,” he said via Powerball officials.
“The mission of the California Lottery, which is to provide supplemental funding for California public education – both public schools and colleges – makes this a huge win for the state.
“As someone who received the rewards of being educated in the California public education system, it’s gratifying to hear that, as a result of my win, the California school system greatly benefits as well.”

Inside Edwin Castro’s lottery prize and properties he has acquired so far.
While Castro might’ve won a $2 billion prize, he accepted the lump payout of $997.6 million in February, months after the winning numbers had been announced.
The hefty sums he deposited in his bank account were after taxes were deducted from his original prize.
Since his historic win, Castro has dropped a combined $76 million on three massive mansions in California, including his most recent purchase earlier this month: a sprawling, $47 million, seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom, infinity pool-equipped compound in Bel Air.
He previously splurged $25 million on a lavish 13,578-square-foot property in the Hollywood Hills. The home has five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a gym, a wine cellar, and a “Batcave-style” entrance.
Another of his new homes is a $4 million mansion, also in the Los Angeles area, which is only 20 miles from his second California complex.
He also currently owns some luxury cars including a white Porsche 911 from the 1980s, a grey Ram 1500 TRX, and three Volkswagen Karmann Ghias, two black and one red.
In November 2023, he acquired two vintage Porsches; a British racing green 1970s Porsche 356 and a black Porsche 1980s 911, to add to his growing collection of cars.
Castro’s sudden ascent to the 1% has not been without controversy.
