She is the youngest and only daughter of Jimmy and Rosalynn. She has three siblings – James Carter, Jack Carter, and Donnel Carter.
Carter entered the limelight as a child when she lived in the White House during the Carter presidency.
During her formative years, Amy had a nanny named Mary Prince, who was part of the prisoner trusty system in Georgia. (The trusty system was a U.S. prison program that granted certain privileges to designated inmates.) Prince was wrongly convicted of murder and later pardoned. She went on to babysit for the Carters’ grandchildren.
Amy garnered worldwide attention at just 9 years old when she read books during a state dinner hosting Canada’s Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau (father of Justin Trudeau), reported the Washington Post.

In 1986, Amy and several others were arrested for protesting CIA recruitment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; the New York Times later reported that Amy and 14 other protesters were acquitted of charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing.
