What happened to Jeremy Carter? Before former US president Jimmy Carter lost his wife, Rosalynn Carter, the couple had lost their grandson Jeremy.

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, wife of 39th President Jimmy Carter, has died at age 96 following a battle with dementia.

The 39th First Lady’s death comes after she was diagnosed with dementia on May 30 as her husband, former President Carter, 99, received hospice care at their Georgia home.

Before her passing, which has sent the world into a state of mourning, the Carter family had lost one of its members.

Jimmy and Rosalynn’s grandson, Jeremy had died aged 28 in 2025. Jimmy Carter publicly shared his feelings about the death of Jeremy on different occasions.

And in the wake of Rosalynn’s death, many want to know more about her grandson; who his parents are, and what happened to him.

Who was Jeremy Carter?

Jeremy Carter was born on June 25, 1987, in the United States.

He shot to fame as one of the 11 grandchildren of former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th US President, and his late wife Rosalynn Carter.

His great-grandparents are Lillian Carter, Wilburn Edgar Smith, Allie M. Smith, and James Earl Carter Sr.

Jeremy’s parents are Donnel Carter and his wife Annette Jene Davis.

His father is one of the three sons of Jimmy Carter. Donnel’s siblings are sister Amy Carter and brothers Jack Carter, and James Carter.

Jeremy was the brother of Joshua Carter and James Carter.

What happened to Jimmy Carter’s grandson, Jeremy?

On December 20, 2015, Jeremy Carter reportedly died of a sudden heart attack in Peachtree City, Georgia, United States.

In an emotional blog post written by his brother Josh, Jeremy Carter reportedly died of a sudden heart attack.

Describing how his brother had undergone several tests a few months before his death, Jeremy stated: “He couldn’t eat well and his legs ached. He had nearly every doctor at Emory look at him.

“They ended up prescribing him Vitamin A and Vitamin D. After all that. He got the full work over and really just needed vitamins. If a 28-year-old heart is going to go out, shouldn’t they have found that? Maybe, but they didn’t.”

According to NBC News, Jimmy Carter told his Sunday school class just a few hours after Jeremy’s death that his grandson was “a very special child a wonderful young man whom we loved very much.”

What have the Carters done since the presidency?

Jimmy Carter’s work after his presidency has been considered more favorable and effective than his work in the White House.

Jimmy established the Carter Center in 1982 to promote and expand human rights.

He continued to travel to manage peace negotiations and fair elections around the world and advance disease prevention in developing nations.

He continued his diplomacy work by aiding in peace talks with countries including North Korea, Cuba, Peru, Israel, and Palestine.

Rosalynn also continued her work focusing on mental health, caregiving, women, and children.

On Sunday, November 19, 2023, Rosalynn passed away at the age of 96.

She had just joined her husband Jimmy in hospice care earlier in the week, following a dementia diagnosis in May 2023.

Both Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are considered key figures for the nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity.

President Carter, 99, is now the oldest living President.
